At this Glendale, California residence's backyard, At this Glendale, California residence's backyard, we added hardscape pavers and garden areas with automatic drips against a new stained wood fence. The fencing added privacy to an open side-driveway. And the bushes lining the fencing are of the crawling variety, that later produce flowers. A much more easily maintained landscape, considering it was all previously grass. Time savings for the owner and a home upgrade.

Many Eagle Rock, California homes have unusually l Many Eagle Rock, California homes have unusually large lots for the Los Angeles area. This resident took advantage of the extended space. He had a dog run installed (happy dog!!) and asked for a multi-use design that is both lushly green and completely practical. ⠀
.⠀
Knowing the end result, it's hard to believe we started out with just a large swath of untended, unhealthy grass. All the grass, down to the roots, was removed. A big job! Removing the grass down to the root system is important to help avoid "grass shooters" later on. This can also minimize herbicide use. After the grass was removed, the area was leveled.⠀
.⠀
The taller trees lining the side of the yard were not removed. But, other shrubbery and free-standing starter trees were taken out to accommodate the new design.⠀
.⠀
The remain space was divided into three areas: 1) planters, 2) turf, and 3) dog run.⠀
⠀
Planters: Bender board and premium bark chips were installed to define the planters. Drought-tolerant perennials were planted, with automatic drip irrigation. With the deep watering from this new irrigation system, the plants could still be colorful and healthy with minimal water.⠀
⠀
Turf: Artificial turf was installed. Doesn't it look completely real? It adds beautiful greenery for aesthetics or small play area.⠀
⠀
Dog run: The diagonal use of the space creates a visually striking appearance yet also allows for a longer dog run. It's also practical for doggy "doo" cleanup and ball-throwing play. The run is composed of compacted DG as the base.⠀

This is a hardwood patio deck in Glendale, Califor This is a hardwood patio deck in Glendale, California. Before this deck, there were only concrete steps leading down to grass -- very basic. We built up the deck for outdoor living space (nice home upgrade), and then added hardscape to extend the patio area after removing the grass. A much more practical-use space for entertaining and relaxing after work, with specific landscape gardens maintained via an automatic drip irrigation system instead of lots of grass to mow. Saves the homeowner lots of time on maintenance, and they can now enjoy their outdoor space with family and friends.⠀

Beautiful Front Walkway in Southern California . T Beautiful Front Walkway in Southern California
.
This Van Nuys, California resident wanted a renovation of her front yard grass area — from a water-intensive eyesore, to a beautiful oasis that uses grass efficiently and beautifully. We recommended a xeriscape Southern California style.
.
True xeriscaping uses creative landscaping to conserve water. For example, instead of putting grass across a whole area, functionality and needs are taken into account. Grass might be used in just a play area or just for a bit of green in the front of the home. The rest of the landscape can then be more drought resistant.
.
We started with a typical Southern California front yard that was once mostly all grass. But, with the drought, it had suffered and was down to just bits of grass blades here and there.
.
First, we removed the grass. The trees with their planters, in the middle of the yard, were also taken out.
.
The front yard was divided into a garden bed, walkway, and grass areas. A curved walkway with pea gravel and randomly placed blue flagstone hugged the front of the home. Steel edging was used to make the curve.
.
New irrigation was put into place, with Tall Fescue sod grass installed. Brass path lighting illuminated the walkway. You can see that the parkway on the left (the other side of the sidewalk) was not included in this renovation project, but could easily be incorporated at a later date.
.
The garden area now includes drought-resistant perennial plants and a Japanese maple — all with drip irrigation and a spotlight on the tree for security and beauty at night. The bark mulch continues down the side of the house to the back. A clean look and easy to maintain.

Refurbished Malibu Backyard . The residents of thi Refurbished Malibu Backyard
.
The residents of this Malibu backyard wanted a refurbishment. The result is a stunning oasis for friends and family that also conserves water with its xeriscape features.
.
First, the concrete slab was demolished.
.
Then, the whole yard was cleaned out, leveled, and marked for the redesign.
.
In place of the concrete outdoor slab, Belgard pavers were placed in an attractive design for a new patio.
.
Tall fescue grass sod was placed in a sculpted grass area, along with automatic irrigation. Bark mulch filled in newly renovated planters with drip irrigation.
.
A new walkway was created to block out the backyard into separate garden areas. The walkway was made with decomposed granite and embedded with drought-tolerant plants for color, texture, and beauty.
.
The final project is a refurbish backyard with both the lushness of grass and green, as well as extensive water-saving features. It’s beautiful and also easy to maintain.

The grass and weeds were removed, with the tree stump ground down. Lots of cleanup to level out the property before laying down the flagstone and other plants.
.
The concrete walkway was also demolished.
.
A flagstone-and-pea-gravel patio area was created. A half barrel with a semi-dwarf citrus tree was placed in the mulched area to the side of the patio.

Renovated Parkway in Chatsworth . This Southern Ca Renovated Parkway in Chatsworth
.
This Southern California home wanted a renovated parkway that would also conserve water. The planters were redesigned, and the result is a unique parkway landscape that the owners can enjoy for years to come.
.
The first step was to remove everything except the tree, the brick walkway (it was in good shape), and the rest of the plants.
.
Then, water-saving drip irrigation was installed. Next, a bed was created around the largest tree with river rock. Decomposed evened out the remaining areas to create a beautiful contrast of colors.
.
Small, rectangular planters were embedded into the decomposed granite. The planters also had automatic drip irrigation installed. Drought tolerant perennials were added to the planters for color and texture. An easy, carefree parkway!

Relaxing Burbank Outdoor Living Space . This Burba Relaxing Burbank Outdoor Living Space
.
This Burbank, California resident is smart. Even though her back outdoor living space was small, she upgraded the available area to improve property value, everyday use, and personal relaxation.
.
There were essentially two areas in her back outdoor living space: 1) an area used for the dog and 2) a sitting area for the resident and guests.
.
Dog Area: When we began the project, the dog area was a small dog run and doggie “doo” area with patchy grass and step stones on the side. It wasn’t that the area wasn’t workable but rather that it just wasn’t nice to look at and it also used more water than was necessary. We removed all the grass down to the root system and leveled the area.
.
The concrete step stones from the old landscape were repurposed. Stabilized DG was compacted into a natural surface. Bender board was molded to create a curved border with deep-mulched perennials added. An automatic deep watering drip irrigation system was installed. The result was water conservation and a much more beautiful dog area. It’s a clean space that is easy to maintain and improves property value.
